Thus, Class A fire-rated materials and assemblies are required in many states.

In California, for instance, Chapter 7A of the state’s building code requires builders to create an acceptable defensible space around the home or building, and this includes the deck area. Chapter 7A specifies the mandatory use of fire-retardant materials in residential and commercial decks across the state.
